113 – Making WPML changes to speed up your website (translation-related)
The translation process using WPML may cause your website to slow. This video demonstrates WPML changes that you can make to speed up your translated site | TIP: If you are modifying your site, pause the video at each step |
Check that the WooCommerce Multilingual plugin is activated | Check how many strings are currently available for translation (WPML > String translation > see numbers at the bottom of the list) > the goal will be to reduce the number of strings that have been translated, as many of these are not even visible to users |
Check which languages are enabled (see WPML > languages), and remove any that are not needed… this will also get rid of the Language Switcher if your site is then only in one language… Note that for a non-English monolingual site, you can also safely get rid of English, and for bilingual sites, it seems that our users have better results splitting into two separate sites |
Switch off selected settings – Adjust IDs for multilingual functionality (WPML > Languages: OFF) – Track where strings appear (WPML > String Translation: OFF) – Auto register strings (WPML > String translation > Auto register strings for translation > Strings from all text domains will be auto-registered > Edit: un-check all of them to be OFF, and then if necessary, tick selected text domains back ON)  NOTE: Let the HQ know if you’ve set Auto register strings to OFF and we can Purge the strings so that your software is no longer wasting resources watching them | Now go and check how many strings are currently available for translation (WPML > String translation > see numbers at the bottom of the list) – it should be less than 10 000 |
